Once upon a time, a group of young rugby players from Uruguay boarded a plane to Chile. They were excited to play a match and explore a new country. On October 13, 1972, their plane took off, but it never reached its destination.

High in the Andes mountains, the weather turned bad. Strong winds and snow made flying dangerous. Suddenly, the plane hit a mountain and crashed. Many people died instantly, but some survived. These survivors were stranded in one of the harshest places on Earth. No food, no shelter, and no way to call for help.

What would you do if you were in their shoes? Let’s learn more about their first days in the snow.

Chapter 2: Surviving the First Night

After the crash, the survivors were scared and cold. The temperature dropped below freezing, and the snow was everywhere. Some of them had injuries, and there was no doctor to help.

They used parts of the broken plane to build a small shelter. Inside, they huddled together to stay warm. One man said, “We must work as a team to survive.” Everyone agreed. They shared blankets and tried to keep each other’s spirits up.

But the biggest problem was food. There was nothing to eat in the mountains. What would they do next? Let’s find out in the next chapter.

Chapter 3: Finding Food

By the third day, the survivors were very hungry. They searched the plane for anything to eat. They found some chocolate, cookies, and wine, but it wasn’t enough. Soon, the food ran out.

Then, someone suggested eating the meat of those who had died in the crash. At first, everyone was shocked. “How can we do this?” one man asked. But they knew it was the only way to survive. Slowly, they agreed.

This decision was hard, but it saved their lives. As the days passed, they grew stronger. Still, the cold and loneliness were difficult to bear. Would anyone ever find them?

Chapter 4: Hope and Despair

Weeks went by, and no rescue teams came. The survivors began to lose hope. They felt forgotten. Every morning, they looked at the sky, hoping to see a plane. But the mountains were too high, and the clouds hid them from view.

One day, a small radio from the plane started working. They heard news about the search being called off. “They think we’re dead,” one man said sadly.

But instead of giving up, the group decided to take action. Two brave men volunteered to climb the tallest mountain nearby. From there, they hoped to see a town or signal for help. Could they succeed? Let’s read on.

Chapter 5: The Brave Climbers

The two climbers, Nando and Roberto, prepared for their dangerous journey. They wore old clothes and carried little food. The snow was deep, and the air was thin. Every step was hard, but they didn’t give up.

After three days of climbing, they reached the top. From there, they saw green valleys far away. “There’s life down there!” Nando shouted. They marked their path and returned to tell the others.

Now, the group had a plan. They would follow the climbers’ route to safety. But could everyone make the journey? Find out in the next chapter.

Chapter 6: Preparing for the Journey

Back at the crash site, the survivors prepared for the long walk. Some were too weak to go, so they stayed behind. The rest packed what little they had and said goodbye to their friends.

Nando and Roberto led the way. The journey was tough. The snow was slippery, and the wind was strong. At night, they slept under the stars, shivering from the cold.

On the fifth day, they ran out of food again. Hunger slowed them down, but they kept moving. Finally, they reached the edge of the snow. Ahead lay green fields and trees. Was help near? Let’s continue.

Chapter 7: Meeting a Stranger

On the ninth day of their journey, something amazing happened. The group saw a man riding a horse in the distance. He was a local farmer. At first, he was scared of these strange, thin men. But when they explained their story, he offered to help.

The farmer gave them food and promised to bring help. He rode back to his village and told everyone about the survivors. Soon, a helicopter arrived to rescue them.

The survivors cried with joy. After 72 days in the mountains, they were finally safe. But what happened to those left behind? Let’s find out.

Chapter 8: Rescuing the Others

Everyone was taken to a hospital in Chile. Doctors treated their injuries and helped them recover. The world was amazed by their story. Newspapers wrote about their bravery, and people called them heroes.
